Heavy rainfall activity, advancing southwest monsoon conditions and persistent heat wave to severe heat wave situations continue across India, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The bulletin issued on May 26, 2026, highlights simultaneous extreme weather patterns driven by monsoon systems, cyclonic circulations and trough formations over multiple regions.
Monsoon And Rainfall Progress Across Dates
May 26, 2026: Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms is likely over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, parts of Northeast India and Lakshadweep under active monsoon conditions.
May 27, 2026: Widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, with continued monsoon activity over Northeast India.
May 28, 2026: Rainfall is likely to intensify over Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, with isolated heavy rainfall in some pockets. Monsoon influence is expected to expand further over eastern India.
May 29, 2026: Thunderstorm-driven rainfall is likely over Odisha, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal, accompanied by strong winds in isolated areas.
May 30, 2026: Scattered rainfall activity is expected to continue over eastern India, including Bihar, Odisha and adjoining regions as monsoon conditions strengthen.
May 28, 2026: Rainfall activity may extend into Andaman and Nicobar Islands as monsoon conditions strengthen over surrounding seas.
May 28, 2026: Thunderstorm activity with gusty winds is likely over Northwest India, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and adjoining areas, with possible localised disruption.
May 29, 2026: Isolated hailstorm and squall conditions are likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and parts of the northern plains.
May 31, 2026: Isolated heavy rainfall pockets are likely over Assam, Meghalaya and other Northeast states.
June 1, 2026: Heavy rainfall activity may persist over parts of Northeast India as monsoon systems remain active.
Heat Wave Conditions Continue In Parallel
Large parts of Northwest, Central and adjoining eastern India continue to experience heat wave to severe heat wave conditions. Maximum temperatures have remained between 43°C and 47°C in several regions, with Banda in Uttar Pradesh recording 47.6°C, among the highest in the country.
The IMD said heat wave conditions are likely to continue over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana over the next few days. Night temperatures also remain above normal in several regions, increasing heat stress. A gradual decline in maximum temperatures is expected from May 29 onwards.
Monsoon Advancement And Weather Systems
The IMD confirmed that the southwest monsoon is steadily advancing over the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Conditions remain favourable for further progression in the coming days.
Active atmospheric systems, including cyclonic circulations over Bihar, Assam and the Bay of Bengal, along with trough formations across northern and eastern India, are driving rainfall and thunderstorm activity. A fresh western disturbance is expected to affect Northwest India from May 28, 2026.
Multi-Hazard Alerts Issued Across India
The IMD has issued warnings for heat wave, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms and squally winds across multiple regions. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into parts of the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea due to rough sea conditions.
Authorities have urged states to follow district-level advisories and take precautionary measures, particularly in areas under orange and red alerts, where risks include flooding, crop damage, transport disruption and heat-related illness.
