India will host the first World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, from June 4 to 8, marking a major step in promoting yogasana as a competitive international sport. More than 500 participants from 75 countries are expected to compete across 12 categories during the five-day event.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya announced the event on Monday and linked the initiative to India’s wider efforts to strengthen yoga’s global presence ahead of the country’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
India Seeks Global Recognition For Yogasana
Dr. Mandaviya said the government and sports bodies would work toward securing international recognition for yogasana within the Olympic framework. He stated that India aims to position yogasana as a future Olympic discipline if the country succeeds in hosting the 2036 Games.
Yoga, which originated in India thousands of years ago, has expanded globally over the last two decades through wellness programmes, cultural diplomacy and international observances such as the International Day of Yoga. The United Nations adopted June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014 following a proposal by India.
Officials said the championship is designed to standardise yogasana as a competitive sport while promoting international participation and judging systems.
Yoga Emerging As India’s Soft Power Tool
Speaking at the event announcement, Dr. Mandaviya described yoga as a growing symbol of India’s soft power and cultural influence. He said yoga is now contributing not only to health and fitness but also to employment opportunities, wellness tourism and global cultural outreach.
Sports and wellness experts note that yogasana competitions have grown steadily in India and abroad in recent years, particularly among younger participants. Organisers believe the championship could help establish formal pathways for international sporting recognition.
The event will also provide a platform for cultural exchange and sports diplomacy, with athletes, trainers and officials expected from Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas.
Ahmedabad To Host Athletes From 75 Countries
Ahmedabad, officially known as Amdavad, has increasingly hosted major national and international sporting events in recent years. Officials said preparations for the championship are underway with support from sports federations and government agencies.
The championship comes as India continues expanding its role in global sports administration and international sporting events ahead of its Olympic ambitions.
