Compensatory Afforestation (CA), plantations are established under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 and its associated rules, as a replacement for forest land that has been diverted for non-forestry purposes.
This initiative aims to compensate for the loss of forest cover and its associated ecosystem services. It should be noted that sites designated for CA are typically degraded and challenging, often requiring considerable time to develop into forest-like vegetation. In cases where initial plantation efforts do not succeed, ongoing endeavors are undertaken to ensure the eventual success of these plantations.
Regarding the demarcation of land banks for afforestation, the Ministry has not stipulated any specific methodology or criteria.
Land matters fall within the purview of state governments, hence the identification and demarcation of land for afforestation are conducted by the respective states/union territories based on their applicable rules and guidelines.
Details pertaining to the creation or proposed creation of land banks for Compensatory Afforestation are maintained by the concerned state/union territory authorities, rather than at the central ministry level.
