The Forest Survey of India (FSI), located in Dehradun and operating under the Ministry, conducts biennial assessments of forest cover, publishing its findings in the India State of Forest Report (ISFR).
The Ministry supports states and union territories in conducting afforestation activities through the Green India Mission, a centrally sponsored scheme. This flagship initiative aims to engage communities in afforestation efforts in degraded forest areas. The scheme emphasizes environmental conservation, rainwater harvesting, afforestation, tree plantation, restoration of degraded forest landscapes, and habitat improvement, including activities for soil moisture conservation.
Details of funds allocated under the Green India Mission to Chhattisgarh over the past five years are as follows. Additionally, significant afforestation activities are carried out under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund, as mandated by the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Act, 2016, and its associated regulations.
Between ISFR 2017 and ISFR 2021, the country's forest cover has increased by 5516 square kilometers. Detailed state and union territory-wise changes in forest cover, including Chhattisgarh, are provided in Annexure-I.
The approved Annual Plan of Operations (APO) for State of Chhattisgarh for undertaking activities under the State CAMPA fund during the last five years are as follows:

The Ministry is also actively implementing the Nagar Van Yojana, which aims to establish 600 Nagar Vans and 400 Nagar Vatikas across the country from 2020-21 to 2026-27.
This initiative is designed to increase green cover in urban and peri-urban areas while promoting biodiversity enhancement.
Furthermore, afforestation activities are pursued under various programs and schemes led by different ministries, such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, National Bamboo Mission, and Sub-Mission on Agroforestry.
Similar efforts are undertaken by state governments, union territory administrations, departments, non-governmental organizations, civil societies, and corporate entities.
These collaborative efforts across multiple sectors have proven effective in conserving and expanding forest cover nationwide.
