Recycling e-waste will not only benefit the environment but also the industries involved in this sector. The government has taken several key steps to promote the recycling of e-waste (electrical and electronic waste), with the E-Waste Management Rules being one of the most significant initiatives.
Under the E-Waste Management Rules, 2016, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has made it mandatory for every recycling unit to register. The CPCB has also issued guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for these units. Both the central and state governments, in collaboration with the CPCB and State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs), will monitor the implementation of these rules. To modernize and bring the recycling industry into the mainstream, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEIT) is also providing support.
According to the E-Waste Management Rules, 2016, registration of all recycling units, identification and registration of workers, skill development, and ensuring worker safety are mandatory requirements. The rules also aim to reduce the use of hazardous substances in the manufacturing of electronic and electrical equipment. Companies that produce these devices and components must ensure that the use of harmful substances such as lead, mercury, and other hazardous materials does not exceed the prescribed limits.
These measures are part of a broader effort to improve e-waste management practices, reduce environmental damage, and ensure the responsible disposal and recycling of electronic waste in India.
