Numerous actions have been taken to protect the black-necked crane species
The Wildlife Institute of India and the Zoological Survey of India have conducted assessments on the population of black-necked cranes. According to the Wildlife Institute of India's survey for the Ladakh region in 2016-2017, the population was estimated to be approximately 66-69 individuals. In Arunachal Pradesh, a small wintering population of about 11 individuals is observed.
Several significant measures have been implemented to safeguard the black-necked crane species:
The Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis) is classified under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, affording it the highest level of protection.
It is listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Convention on Conservation of Migratory Species.
Important habitats of the Black-necked Crane, such as the Changthang Sanctuary in Ladakh, have been designated as Protected Areas.
The Tso Kar Wetlands Complex, crucial for both foraging and breeding of the Black-necked Crane, was designated as a Ramsar Site in December 2020.
The National Wildlife Action Plan (2017-2031), released by the Ministry in October 2017, includes specific chapters and priority actions for wildlife conservation, addressing threats to species, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, and ecosystem conservation across inland, coastal, and marine environments.
The Central Government supports State/Union Territory Governments through the Centrally Sponsored Scheme ‘Development of Wildlife Habitats’ to manage wildlife and their habitats nationwide.
·Guidelines for management planning of Protected Areas have been issued under Section 33 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
The Government of India has launched the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) program to enhance public awareness about environmental conservation.
Special observances such as World Wildlife Day, Wetlands Day, Migratory Bird Day, and Wildlife Week are celebrated to promote awareness of wildlife and biodiversity among the public.
