India's Ministry of Environment is actively implementing the CSS - Forest Fire Prevention and Management scheme to strengthen state and union territory capabilities in preventing and managing forest fires across the country.

In an effort to fortify the nation's ability to prevent and control forest fires, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India, continues to spearhead comprehensive measures under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) - Forest Fire Prevention and Management. These initiatives aim to bolster the capacities of state governments and union territories in safeguarding the country's vast forest cover.

Financial Support and Technological Innovation

Under the CSS, financial assistance is provided to state governments and union territories, enabling them to implement robust strategies for forest fire prevention and management. This support is crucial in enhancing preparedness and response capabilities across regions prone to forest fires.

To facilitate timely detection and monitoring, the Forest Survey of India (FSI), operating under the Ministry, has introduced a state-of-the-art satellite-based Forest Fire Monitoring and Alert system. This technological advancement ensures that forest fire alerts are promptly disseminated via SMS and email to registered users, facilitating swift action and minimizing potential damage.

Operational Readiness and Coordination

Recognizing the critical importance of coordinated response mechanisms, a dedicated 24x7 Disaster Management Control Room has been established within the Ministry. This control room serves as a central hub for monitoring forest fire incidents nationwide, enabling real-time coordination and deployment of resources to affected areas.

Maharashtra's Proactive Measures

Highlighting specific efforts in Maharashtra, the State Forest Department has implemented a series of proactive measures aimed at forest fire prevention and management:

• Strategic Planning: Comprehensive forest fire management plans are meticulously prepared to effectively respond to fire risks and incidents.

• Preventive Actions: Ahead of the forest fire season, preparatory activities such as creating and maintaining fire lines, clearing excess vegetation, and ensuring upkeep of firefighting equipment are diligently undertaken.

• Vigilance and Capacity Building: The engagement of fire watchers, regular patrolling, and deployment of mobile squad units ensure constant vigilance. Additionally, continuous capacity building through training and provision of firefighting equipment enhances the readiness of field staff.

• Community Involvement: Promoting community participation through Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMCs) and Eco-Development Committees (EDCs) plays a pivotal role in fostering local support and collaboration in forest fire management.

• Technological Integration: Leveraging drone technology in sensitive areas enhances monitoring capabilities, enabling proactive responses to emerging fire threats.

• Centralized Monitoring: The establishment of a forest control room facilitates centralized monitoring and coordination with field officers, optimizing response efforts during fire incidents.
