The Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Coal convened on December 19 to discuss the sector's role in supporting sustainability and green initiatives. The meeting, chaired by Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy, focused on the coal industry’s efforts to balance India’s energy security needs with environmental preservation.
Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey also attended the meeting, which highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of coal mining. Senior officials from Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries were present, joining committee members in the discussion.
Coal Sector’s Commitment to Sustainability
Reddy addressed the committee, underscoring coal’s pivotal role in supporting India's economic growth and energy security, while emphasizing the sector's efforts toward sustainability. He highlighted the ongoing initiatives of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in the coal and lignite industries to promote environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and societal well-being. The Minister noted that environmental protection during mining operations remained a core focus for the sector.
“Our commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070, as outlined by Prime Minister Modi, drives the Ministry’s efforts to ensure that coal production aligns with sustainable practices,” Reddy said.
Coal PSUs Advanced Green Initiatives
A presentation by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Coal detailed various environmental initiatives that had been implemented by coal and lignite PSUs, including afforestation, eco-parks, renewable energy projects, and dust suppression measures. The efforts aligned with the Mission LiFE program and were designed to improve the environmental footprint of coal operations.
Committee members praised the coal industry’s proactive measures in promoting sustainability, noting the direct benefits to local communities. They offered valuable suggestions on expanding these green initiatives, particularly in the areas of community welfare and the adoption of best practices by coal companies.
Reddy expressed his appreciation for the committee members’ contributions and assured that their recommendations would be incorporated into the Ministry’s future policies, ensuring that India’s coal sector continued to drive economic growth while promoting a sustainable and greener future.
