With a renewed commitment to achieving universal access to safe water and sanitation by 2027, DDWS officials called on state representatives to leverage community leadership and prioritize the maintenance of WASH assets. As the sector anticipates new leadership, there is hope that these initiatives will continue to elevate the WASH landscape in rural India.
What is DDWS and WASH?
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) is an essential agency under India's Ministry of Jal Shakti, dedicated to ensuring access to safe drinking water and sanitation across the country, particularly in rural areas. Its mission is to improve public health and enhance the quality of life through sustainable water supply and sanitation services.
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) encompass vital practices aimed at promoting health and well-being. WASH initiatives focus on providing safe drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, and hygiene education, which are crucial for preventing waterborne diseases and improving overall community health. By addressing these interconnected needs, DDWS plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development and improving living conditions in rural India.
