Starting today, October 22, 2024, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has activated Stage-II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in response to Delhi's poor air quality. With an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 310, authorities will implement measures such as enhanced road cleaning and stricter dust control. Residents are encouraged to use public transport and adhere to pollution-reducing guidelines. These efforts aim to improve air quality and safeguard public health in the region.
Stage-II of GRAP Activated to Combat ‘Very Poor’ Air Quality
In response to alarming pollution levels, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has implemented Stage-II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) starting at 8:00 AM on October 22, 2024. The daily average Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi has reached 310, categorizing the air quality as 'Very Poor.' Meteorological forecasts indicate that this poor air quality is likely to persist in the coming days, prompting urgent action from authorities.
Key Actions and Public Guidelines
Under the new measures, various agencies, including the Pollution Control Boards of NCR states and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), are tasked with enforcing an 11-point action plan. This includes intensified road cleaning, dust control at construction sites, and strict regulation of diesel generators. Citizens are also encouraged to play their part by opting for public transport, avoiding personal vehicles, and refraining from activities that contribute to air pollution.
The public is urged to follow specific guidelines listed in the Citizen Charter of Stage-II, which includes:
Using public transport instead of personal vehicles.
Choosing less congested routes, even if they are longer.
Regularly replacing air filters in vehicles.
Avoiding construction activities that generate dust.
Not burning solid waste and biomass.
Authorities will also enhance traffic management to improve vehicle flow and implement measures to increase the use of CNG and electric buses.
Outlook and Next Steps
The CAQM emphasizes that these actions are critical to preventing further deterioration of air quality. With current weather patterns suggesting continued poor air quality, residents are urged to stay informed about pollution levels and take necessary precautions. Community organizations, such as Resident Welfare Associations, will also play a role by providing electric heaters to avoid open burning during the colder months.
By collectively adhering to these guidelines and supporting the implementation of GRAP measures, the citizens of Delhi-NCR can help improve air quality and safeguard public health during this challenging period.
