In a strategic move aimed at addressing the future water needs of Faridabad, an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and the Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority (FMDA). This agreement marks a pivotal step in augmenting the water supply for the city, focusing on sustainable groundwater development in the Yamuna flood plains.
With Faridabad projected to face a significant water supply gap by 2031, the MoU sets the stage for a comprehensive study to assess both the potential and quality of groundwater resources in the flood plains adjacent to the Yamuna River. The study will culminate in the creation of a detailed groundwater management plan, which will include strategies for artificial recharge and the expansion of groundwater resources within Faridabad district. The MoU is scheduled to be in effect until March 31, 2025, by which time the study is anticipated to be completed
As a key urban center in the National Capital Region (NCR), Faridabad has experienced rapid growth, placing increasing demands on its water resources. Currently, a significant portion of the city’s water supply is drawn from Ranney Wells located along the Yamuna River’s flood plains. To keep pace with the city's growth and ensure a sustainable water supply in the future, it is crucial to explore and develop additional groundwater sources.
The outcomes of this study are expected to be instrumental in the successful implementation of Faridabad’s smart city initiatives, addressing both present and future water requirements. This collaborative effort emphasizes the importance of proactive urban planning and water resource management, ensuring the city’s resilience against future challenges
The signing of this MoU highlights the Central Government's commitment to advancing scientific water resource management and promoting sustainable urban development. It also reflects a dedication to fostering cooperative federalism through strategic partnerships that address critical infrastructure needs.
