Floating Solar Park in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh, has become a symbol of India's commitment to clean and sustainable energy. Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi visited the park on January 4 to mark a significant milestone in India’s renewable energy journey. The Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park, with a total capacity of 600 MW, is now the largest floating solar project in India and one of the largest in Asia.
Already partially commissioned at 278 MW, the project demonstrates India’s ambitious vision for increasing its reliance on renewable energy. Situated in Khandwa district on the Omkareshwar Reservoir, the floating solar park is a major step in India's efforts to meet its clean energy targets while minimizing land use.
A Vision of Clean Energy and Innovation
During his visit, Union Minister Joshi highlighted the innovative floating solar technology, which overcomes traditional land constraints and offers improved efficiency. By harnessing the cooling effect of water, this technology boosts the performance of solar panels, contributing to a greater energy output.
"India is embracing pioneering solutions like floating solar to meet our energy needs sustainably. The performance enhancement from the cooling effect of water is a game changer for renewable energy," Joshi said.
Madhya Pradesh’s Pivotal Role in India's Renewable Future
Joshi also emphasized the importance of Madhya Pradesh in driving India’s renewable energy transition. Over the past decade, the state has grown its renewable energy capacity by more than 14 times, from under 500 MW in 2012 to its current levels. He commended the state’s dedication to sustainable energy development, which has made initiatives like the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park possible.
"Madhya Pradesh’s growth in renewable energy is a model for the nation. The 278 MW capacity of this park is just the beginning, and we look forward to the entire 600 MW being fully operational, generating over 4600 million units of clean energy over the next 25 years," Joshi said.
A Step Toward a Sustainable Future
The Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park, with a total development cost of ₹330 crore and supported by ₹49.85 crore in Central Financial Assistance, represents a major achievement in India’s push for clean energy. Inaugurated in late 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the park reflects India's dedication to achieving sustainability goals while positioning itself as a leader in the global clean energy transition.
"This project is a testament to India’s unwavering commitment to renewable energy and environmental sustainability," said Joshi. "Congratulations to all involved in making this vision a reality."
As India accelerates its efforts to tackle climate change, the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park serves as a beacon of the nation's future-focused, clean energy future.
