In a significant upgrade to flood management technology, Version 2.0 of the ‘FloodWatch India’ mobile application launched today in New Delhi. This enhanced version, developed by the Central Water Commission (CWC), promises to revolutionize how flood information is accessed and understood across the country.
Originally launched on August 17, 2023, the initial version of the ‘FloodWatch India’ app aimed to provide real-time flood forecasts and updates from 200 forecast stations. The newly launched Version 2.0 greatly expands on this, offering detailed data from an additional 392 flood monitoring stations, raising the total to 592. This expansion provides users with a far more comprehensive and nuanced view of flood conditions nationwide.
In addition to the increase in monitoring stations, Version 2.0 introduces data on the storage levels of 150 major reservoirs. This feature is designed to enhance users' understanding of potential downstream flood risks by integrating reservoir storage information into the flood forecasting model.
The app utilizes cutting-edge technology, including satellite data analysis, mathematical modeling, and real-time monitoring to deliver precise and timely flood forecasts. It is designed to be user-friendly, offering information in both English and Hindi, and supports both text and audio broadcast formats. This allows users to access crucial flood information in a way that best suits their needs.
Available for download on both Android and iOS platforms, the ‘FloodWatch India’ app is free of charge. It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
This upgrade underscores the commitment of the Indian government to improving disaster preparedness and response through technological advancements, ultimately aiming to safeguard communities and enhance flood management strategies across the nation.
