India Energy Week 2025 officially kicked off on February 11 at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi, bringing together global energy professionals, industry leaders, and innovators. Over the next four days, the event will provide a platform for discussions on energy security, sustainability, and the latest technological advancements in the energy sector.
The third edition of the event features more than 700 exhibitors, including representatives from 26 national and international oil companies, state-owned enterprises, and private firms. With over 70,000 attendees expected, the event promises to be a major venue for fostering business connections, sharing knowledge, and exploring innovations aimed at shaping the future of global energy.
India's Energy Strategy: LNG and Biofuel Expansion
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, H.E. Hardeep Singh Puri, delivered the inaugural address at India Energy Week 2025. He emphasized India’s growing commitment to sustainable energy practices while addressing the nation's current and future energy needs. Minister Puri highlighted India’s plan to increase its usage of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from 6% to 15%, which will be supported by long-term agreements with Qatar.
Puri also spoke about the ongoing efforts to develop a significant LNG storage infrastructure, positioning the fuel as a crucial component of the country's energy mix. In addition to LNG, the Minister outlined India’s biofuel initiatives, noting that the country aims for a 20% usage of green energy. The government's strategy to boost biofuel production includes providing incentives and subsidies for electrolysers, facilitating the expansion of this sector.
Investments and Future Energy Goals
India's diversified energy portfolio is central to its long-term energy security, and the country has made substantial investments in renewable energy. Minister Puri revealed that India plans to use 500 million tonnes of biofuel feedstock and scale up hydrogen energy production to 5 million metric tonnes by 2030. These efforts are backed by significant financial investments: $96 billion for hydrogen projects and $30 billion for LNG infrastructure, refining, and petrochemical expansions.
Furthermore, India has achieved 100% electrification and has made strides in providing access to clean cooking through the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). As part of the event, the Union Minister also launched the Open Acreage Licensing Policy X, which identifies 25 blocks covering 1,91,986 square kilometers for hydrocarbon exploration, further supporting the country’s energy diversification.
