The Government of India is calling for proposals to establish Centres of Excellence (CoE) focused on cutting-edge research and development in Green Hydrogen. The initiative, launched under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aims to propel the country’s clean energy future by fostering innovation, sustainability, and energy independence. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) issued the call for proposals (CfP) on November 4, 2024, inviting both public and private entities to participate.
These Centres of Excellence will play a pivotal role in advancing Green Hydrogen technologies across its entire value chain—from production and storage to utilization. By establishing world-class research hubs, India aims to accelerate its transition to a low-carbon economy and become a global leader in the emerging Green Hydrogen sector.
A Collaborative Approach to Green Hydrogen Innovation
The CoEs will serve as focal points for collaborative research, facilitating partnerships between academia, industry, and government to drive technological breakthroughs. They will also focus on skill development and the dissemination of knowledge to ensure a workforce capable of supporting the growth of Green Hydrogen in India and worldwide.
"The Centres will foster a deep ecosystem of innovation, improving process efficiencies and creating new products that will support India’s goal of becoming self-reliant in clean energy," said an MNRE spokesperson. The initiative will leverage a budget of Rs 100 crores for the establishment of the Centres, further underscoring the government's commitment to meeting the ambitious targets of its Green Hydrogen Mission.

Strengthening India's Role in Global Clean Energy Transition
Launched in January 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission has an outlay of Rs 19,744 crores through FY 2029-30, aligning with India’s broader climate goals and making the country a significant player in the global clean energy transition. By promoting Green Hydrogen, India seeks to decarbonize its economy, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and position itself as a leader in clean energy technologies.
The Centres of Excellence will be key to achieving these long-term objectives, with the potential to drive both national and international collaborations, ultimately contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
