In an exciting development for both the steel industry and the environment, the Union Government has announced the launch of three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These initiatives aim to harness the power of green hydrogen in steel production, marking a significant step towards sustainable industry practices and a cleaner future.

Empowering Change in Steel Production

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has set forth guidelines to implement these pilot projects, with a clear objective: to identify and showcase advanced technologies that utilize green hydrogen in steel making. This is not just about reducing emissions; it’s about demonstrating safe and secure operations while validating technical and economic feasibility. As the world increasingly focuses on sustainability, these pilot projects promise to lead the way in low-carbon iron and steel production.

The three approved projects include innovative approaches such as using 100% hydrogen to produce Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), reducing reliance on coal and coke in blast furnaces, and injecting hydrogen into DRI production processes. With financial backing of ₹347 crore from the government, these initiatives will pave the way for broader adoption of green hydrogen technologies across India’s steel industry.
