India and the Nordic nations agreed to deepen cooperation in green technology, innovation, trade and global governance during the Third India-Nordic Summit held on May 19, 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed leaders from Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Iceland and highlighted expanding economic and strategic ties between India and the Nordic region.
India-Nordic Trade And Investment Ties Expand
During the joint press statement, Prime Minister Modi said bilateral trade between India and Nordic countries has nearly quadrupled over the past decade. He also stated that investments from Nordic countries into India have increased by around 200 percent during the same period.
The Prime Minister said recent trade agreements are expected to strengthen economic cooperation further. India has implemented the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement with Norway, Iceland and other European Free Trade Association countries since October 2025. India also concluded a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union earlier this year, involving Denmark, Finland and Sweden.
Officials said the agreements are expected to support manufacturing, investment flows, job creation and technology partnerships across sectors.
Green Technology And Innovation Partnership Announced
India and the Nordic countries decided to expand cooperation through a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership. The initiative aims to combine Nordic expertise in sustainability and advanced technologies with India’s large-scale industrial and digital ecosystem.
The statement highlighted Iceland’s geothermal and fisheries expertise, Norway’s blue economy and Arctic capabilities and broader Nordic strengths in maritime sustainability. India also plans to collaborate with Sweden in advanced manufacturing and defence, with Finland in telecom and digital technology and with Denmark in cyber security and health technology.
Focus On Research, Talent And Global Issues
The summit also focused on research cooperation, university partnerships and startup ecosystem linkages. Both sides agreed to increase collaboration in Arctic and polar research while expanding opportunities in skill development and talent mobility.
On international issues, leaders discussed global conflicts, multilateral reforms and counterterrorism cooperation. India and Nordic countries reiterated support for a rules-based global order and called for reforms in multilateral institutions.
