India’s First Human Submersible to Reach 500 Meters in 2025, 6,000 Meters by 2026
In a major stride toward scientific progress and ocean exploration, India is set to launch its first human underwater submersible this year, as part of the Deep Ocean Mission. Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister for Science and Technology, made the announcement during the second meeting of the Mission Steering Committee, highlighting the nation’s ambition to be among a select group of countries with the technological capability to operate such sophisticated vehicles.
The initial submersible, capable of reaching depths of up to 500 meters, marks the first phase of a broader mission aimed at deep-sea exploration. The nation aims to advance this technology by next year, with plans to extend the submersible's capabilities to a depth of 6,000 meters.

Mission Supports India’s Blue Economy, Indigenous Technology at its Core
Dr. Singh underscored the significance of the mission not only in terms of its technical achievements but also its potential to strengthen India's blue economy. The deep-sea submersible is entirely developed using indigenous technology, a testament to India's growing self-reliance in cutting-edge science and engineering.
The mission’s focus is on tapping into the wealth of the ocean, which includes critical minerals, rare metals, and untapped marine biodiversity, vital for India's long-term economic sustainability and growth. The technological developments derived from this mission will contribute to a variety of sectors, including sustainable fisheries, environmental conservation, and resource management.
The mission will not only explore new frontiers in marine science but also provide a foundation for enhancing global cooperation in ocean research. This interdisciplinary approach is designed to expand understanding of deep-sea ecosystems, improving the nation’s ability to protect ocean biodiversity and promote environmental sustainability.
