Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a crucial relief measure for mango farmers in Karnataka, addressing the significant drop in mango prices, particularly for the Totapuri variety. In a recent video conference with Karnataka’s Agriculture Minister N. Chaluvaraya Swamy, a decision was made to compensate farmers for the differential price on 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes.
Central and State Governments to Share the Burden
The agreement ensures that both the Central and State governments will equally share the financial responsibility of compensating the farmers for the price difference. This comes after Karnataka’s government raised concerns over the plummeting prices of mangoes, which were far below the usual market rate, affecting the income of farmers. Karnataka had earlier submitted a proposal to the central government, detailing the distress faced by mango farmers, particularly for the Totapuri variety, and requested support.
The compensation plan will cover 2.5 lakh metric tonnes out of Karnataka’s total mango production of 10 lakh metric tonnes. This move will ensure that farmers receive a fair price for their produce, alleviating the financial strain caused by the price decline.
Tomato Prices Stabilize, No Immediate Action Needed
In the same discussion, Karnataka’s Agriculture Minister noted that while tomato prices had also been low when the proposal was submitted, they had since stabilized. As a result, no further action is required for tomatoes at this time.
Minister Chouhan’s decision was welcomed by Minister Chaluvaraya Swamy, who expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, providing much-needed relief to mango farmers in the state.
This collaborative effort between the Central and State governments underscores the importance of supporting agricultural communities and ensuring fair prices for farmers.
