On 17 June 2025, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) organized a national workshop in Jodhpur to mark World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. The event, held at the Arid Forest Research Institute (ICFRE-AFRI), focused on sustainable land management in India’s arid and semi-arid regions.
Union Minister Shri Bhupender Yadav highlighted India’s proactive efforts in combating desertification through ecosystem restoration, drought resilience, and biodiversity conservation. He emphasized the dangers of unsustainable agricultural practices, such as excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, and called for community-led initiatives to restore the Aravalli Mountain range, a crucial natural barrier against desertification.
Shri Yadav also spotlighted key initiatives like the Amrit Sarovars for rejuvenating water bodies, and the Matri Van and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam tree-planting campaigns. He expressed confidence that India will achieve its green economy goals by 2047, balancing sustainability with economic growth.
Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, praised India’s increasing forest cover and stressed the importance of preserving the Aravalli range for water conservation and biodiversity.
The workshop also saw the launch of several key publications, including the Green India Mission document and a Sustainable Land Management (SLM) book, alongside the distribution of AFRI Shesham Clones to farmers. Technical sessions covered community-led restoration strategies and case studies on desertification control from global development partners.
The event reaffirmed India’s leadership under the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and its commitment to achieving land degradation neutrality by 2030 through science-based, participatory approaches.
