In a momentous ceremony in New Delhi, President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated the 8th India Water Week, marking a significant commitment to addressing the nation’s water challenges. The event, held at Bharat Mandapam from September 17 to 20, is attended by the Union Minister and Minister of State for Jal Shakti, along with various dignitaries from around the globe. The inauguration commenced with a symbolic ‘Jal Bharo’ ceremony, emphasizing the critical importance of water conservation.
The four-day event, themed around knowledge sharing and discussions among water experts, features 18 sessions focusing on vital water management issues. A Ministerial Plenary session, chaired by Union Minister C.R. Paatil, brought together ministers from countries including Denmark, Guyana, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania, as well as water resources ministers from various Indian states.
In her keynote address, President Murmu highlighted the sacredness of water, drawing on ancient Vedic wisdom to stress its essential role in sustaining life. She urged the audience, particularly the youth, to recognize their responsibility in preserving this precious resource for future generations, stating, “Water Conservation is the only way to give a better and safer tomorrow to coming generations.”
Another remarkable component of the event was the Global Water Leaders’ Plenary, featuring two sessions where global leaders shared insights and perspectives on the central theme. Additionally, a Country Forum on the sidelines of India Water Week provided a platform for different nations to showcase their best practices and experiences in the water sector.
A highlight of Day one was the inspiring accounts of two grassroots Water Warriors, Ms. Ujiaro Bai from Madhya Pradesh and Ms. Lakmen Mary Nongkhlaw from Meghalaya. Their impactful initiatives in water conservation garnered a standing ovation, showcasing the vital role of women in driving change at the community level.
The Practitioners' Forum, which began today, facilitated the sharing of best practices in the implementation of various water schemes and programs, alongside lessons learned during their execution.
The day's proceedings concluded with a cultural program that enthralled the audience, celebrating the rich tapestry of India's cultural heritage while reinforcing the importance of water conservation.
As India Water Week unfolds, it promises to be a platform for robust discussions, innovative solutions, and a collective push towards sustainable water management practices, reaffirming India’s commitment to a water-secure future.
