A five-day residential training program focused on the operation and management of rural water supply schemes is currently being held in Andaman and Nicobar Islands from February 24 to February 28, 2025. The program is organized by the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee National Institute of Water and Sanitation (SPM-NIWAS) in collaboration with the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD). The course aims to enhance the capabilities of engineers working in rural water supply systems across the islands.
Objective of the Training Course
The primary objective of the training is to improve the operational and managerial skills of Junior Engineers (JEs) and Assistant Engineers (AEs) working with the Andaman and Nicobar administration. By addressing key issues such as system inefficiencies, non-revenue water (NRW), and inadequate community engagement, the program seeks to provide engineers with the tools necessary for effective water supply management.
The training covers a wide range of topics, including the challenges specific to the water supply systems of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, safe drinking water standards, and various techniques for operation and maintenance of surface water-based schemes, sand filters, and pressure filters. The program also emphasizes the reduction of water loss, efficient distribution management, financial planning, and strategies for citizen service delivery and grievance redressal.
Key Areas of Focus
The training module includes practical approaches for reducing non-revenue water (NRW) and improving community engagement in water management. In addition to technical skills, participants are being introduced to financial planning strategies to ensure the sustainability of rural water supply schemes. The course also covers how engineers can align their work with the standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for safe drinking water, as well as the frequency of sample collection.
The session includes input from experts at SPM-NIWAS, who collaborated closely with APWD officials to tailor the training content to meet the specific requirements of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The training is expected to be extended to other states and Union Territories in a phased manner, aiming to improve the operational efficiency and sustainability of rural water supply schemes across India.
