Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, wrapped up a significant three-day visit to Germany, aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. His visit coincided with the Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC), marking a pivotal moment for India’s commitment to global sustainability and renewable energy.
Keynote Address at Hamburg Sustainability Conference
During the HSC, Minister Joshi delivered a keynote address on October 7, where he emphasized India’s pivotal role in global renewable energy initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance, which now boasts support from over 100 countries. He highlighted the country’s impressive progress in renewable energy over the past decade, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. His address underscored the urgent need for international collaboration to address the challenges posed by the global energy transition.
Bilateral Meetings with Global Leaders
Minister Joshi engaged in numerous bilateral meetings throughout his visit, discussing shared priorities with various global leaders. A key meeting with Mr. Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), centered on India’s renewable energy landscape and future collaborations aimed at sustainable development. Further discussions with Ms. Svenja Schulze, Germany’s Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, reinforced mutual interests in green energy and sustainability.
Among other notable interactions, Minister Joshi met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Egyptian Minister of Petroleum Karim Badawi, and representatives from the Asian Development Bank, focusing on enhancing international cooperation in energy transition efforts. In a significant engagement in Berlin, he met with Dr. Robert Habeck, Germany’s Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. The two leaders explored opportunities in Green Hydrogen, Offshore Wind, Biogas, and the recycling of Solar Waste, with Dr. Habeck expressing optimism about India’s journey toward achieving its goal of 500 GW of renewable energy.
Engaging the Indian Diaspora
In addition to official discussions, Minister Joshi addressed the Indian diaspora in Berlin, acknowledging their contributions to Germany’s economy and their vital role in promoting India’s global presence.
Earlier this year, during the RE-INVEST 2024 conference, India and Germany established the India-Germany Platform for Investment in Renewable Energies, aimed at facilitating business opportunities and advancing technology transfer in the renewable energy sector. This initiative exemplifies the growing bond between the two nations.
