Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar delivered a powerful address at the National Energy Conservation Day event in New Delhi, urging immediate and decisive action to combat climate change. He emphasized the urgency of united efforts from all sections of society to address the global environmental crisis, stressing that "we either act together, or we perish together."
In his speech, the Vice President drew parallels between the ongoing climate emergency and the COVID-19 pandemic, citing both as non-discriminatory challenges that require collective action. "COVID affected all, whether rich or poor, urban or rural. Similarly, climate change threatens us all, and it is only through unity that we can overcome it," he stated.
Renewing India’s Ancient Commitment to Conservation
Vice President Dhankar reminded the audience of India’s ancient wisdom embedded in the country's civilizational ethos, which has always emphasized the importance of nature and conservation. He referenced sacred texts like the Vedas, Puranas, Mahabharata, and Ramayana, highlighting how these ancient teachings promoted environmental harmony.
"Our ancient wisdom foresaw this crisis. The Shanti Path and the plea for environmental peace found in our epics must be translated into action," he said. Drawing attention to the Prime Minister's initiative, ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,’ the Vice President urged citizens to take a pledge to plant at least one tree, reinforcing that conservation is not just a philosophy, but a way of life.
Innovation, Responsibility, and a Sustainable Future
The Vice President also highlighted the importance of sustainable development and energy conservation. He warned that overconsumption of resources could deprive future generations, emphasizing that our planet’s resources are finite. "Fiscal strength should not determine the use of natural resources. It's a collective responsibility," he said.
Vice President Dhankar praised India's leadership in promoting renewable energy, citing the International Solar Alliance and the country’s efforts at the G20 to push forward sustainable energy solutions. He also acknowledged the growing accessibility of renewable energy in rural areas, marking significant progress in India’s environmental initiatives.
In conclusion, the Vice President called for innovation and systemic solutions to tackle pollution and environmental degradation. He pointed to the persistent issue of hazardous air quality in the National Capital due to stubble burning, urging greater attention to systemic changes. “We must address these challenges not just as individuals but as a society,” he said.
With a focus on duty over rights, the Vice President urged citizens to embrace their constitutional obligations, especially in terms of environmental conservation. "Energy conservation is not just a responsibility; it is essential for a dignified life for future generations," he added.
