The World Biogas Association INDIA Congress 2024, held in New Delhi, highlights India’s pivotal role in the Global Biogas industry as it aims to establish a comprehensive framework for rapid growth. With discussions centered on overcoming challenges such as infrastructure limitations and technological gaps, stakeholders are united in developing a National Biogas Roadmap by COP30 in 2025. The event underscores India’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions, emphasizing the potential of Biogas to address environmental issues while generating green jobs and driving economic development.
A Strategic Focus on India’s Biogas Potential
The World Biogas Association (WBA) has kicked off its two-day INDIA Congress 2024, shining a spotlight on India’s ambitious role in the Global Biogas sector. With the backdrop of Brazil preparing to lead the G20, host COP30, and take charge of BRICS in 2025, the Congress serves as a crucial platform for advancing Bioenergy discussions.
The opening ceremony of the Congress was graced by an esteemed lineup of dignitaries, including Ms. Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive of the World Biogas Association, who served as Chair and Moderator. Among the notable attendees were Tarun Kapoor, Advisor to the Prime Minister's Office; Shombi Sharp, the UN Resident Coordinator in India; and Shri Amitabh Kant, G20 Sherpa of India and former CEO of the Government of India. Dr. Pradeep Monga, Senior Advisor and Policy Director at the World Biogas Association, and S.N. Yadav, Executive Director (CBG) at GAIL, contributed their insights on the potential of biogas in advancing India's renewable energy landscape. This gathering highlighted the collaborative efforts necessary to foster innovation and policy development in the biogas sector.
Participants engaged in six dynamic sessions covering a range of topics, including financing mechanisms, regulatory frameworks, and case studies from state governments and municipalities. These discussions emphasized the critical role of Biogas in addressing environmental issues while promoting economic development.
Overcoming Challenges to Scale Biogas Production
The Congress underscored the importance of overcoming existing challenges, such as limitations in distribution networks, pricing issues, and technological gaps. The Indian government’s pilot projects in states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab are indicative of its commitment to reducing emissions and generating green jobs. However, collaborative efforts between public and private sectors are essential to enhance infrastructure and technological efficiency.
Amitabh Kant remarked, “Biogas holds immense potential for India's green energy future. With initiatives like the SATAT scheme aimed at establishing 5,000 CBG plants, India is poised to lead globally in Biogas production.”

A Roadmap for the Future
A central theme of the World Biogas Association Congress is the commitment to developing a National Biogas Roadmap by COP30 in 2025. This roadmap will focus on comprehensive policies, capacity-building efforts, and addressing supply chain requirements crucial for scaling Biogas production in India.
Charlotte Morton highlighted the economic opportunities tied to recycling organic waste. “India is perfectly positioned to seize this chance and lead globally. We look forward to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure rapid growth in the Biogas sector,” she stated.
The Congress will continue to explore innovative strategies, such as integrating Bioethanol production with Biogas, aiming to develop regulatory frameworks that enhance investment and efficiency in waste recycling. With a robust agenda ahead, the INDIA Congress 2024 stands as a pivotal event in India’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
