The continuous increase in air pollution is one of the biggest global challenges from an environmental perspective. It is harmful to both our health and the climate. Air pollution is a looming crisis in almost every country in the world, whether developed or developing. Air pollution not only harms our health but also affects our economy, tourism, biodiversity, and the environment.
In December 2019, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed a proposal to celebrate International Day of Clean Air for Blue Sky every year on September 7. This year's theme is "The Air We Share," which emphasizes that air pollution knows no geographical boundaries. The time has come for collective responsibility and action on this issue.
How Important is the Prevention of Air Pollution?
On one hand, many fine and invisible particles of pollution enter our bodies through the lungs, while on the other hand, Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) contribute to global warming and are also responsible for health-related diseases.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 99% of the global population is breathing polluted air, and approximately 7 million people die every year due to air pollution. Of these, 90% live in low- and middle-income countries. Polluted air increases the risk of health issues such as ischemic heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and several chronic pulmonary diseases.
Women, children, and the elderly are the most affected by air pollution. Women who use wood or kerosene for cooking or other household activities face greater risks from air pollution.
Global Efforts to Control Air Pollution
Many international organizations are continuously working to address air pollution. For example, nearly a year ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued Air Quality Guidelines for all policymakers. These guidelines shared evidence-based information to help prevent the health impacts of air pollution.
Similarly, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recently published the Air Quality and Climate Bulletin 2022 (AQCB 2022), which focuses on the air pollution caused by increasing wildfires, as this has a direct impact on our health.
Air pollution is affecting our economy, work productivity, healthcare costs, tourism sector, and many other areas. Therefore, more global efforts are now being made to improve air quality and reduce air pollution.
