Small Island Developing States (SIDS), on the frontlines of the climate crisis and striving to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are preparing for the Fourth International Conference on SIDS (SIDS4) in Antigua and Barbuda from 27 to 30 May 2024.
In a pivotal Preparatory Committee Meeting held in New York this week, island nations are collaborating with global partners, civil society, and the private sector to chart a transformative path forward. Discussions center on addressing SIDS-specific challenges like resource constraints, heavy reliance on trade, and vulnerability to external shocks.
The meeting, attended by representatives including Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, and other key figures, aims to outline the agenda for SIDS4 and provide updates on progress thus far.
Hosted by Antigua and Barbuda and co-chaired by Maldives, the conference seeks to bolster resilience and sustainability across SIDS, highlighting their unique needs and contributions amidst global climate and economic pressures.
Scheduled for 26 January at the UN Press Briefing Room, the press briefing will offer insights into the upcoming conference's goals and expectations.
