UN emphasized to shift to sustainable energy for all essential for climate and sustainability goals

The UN marks its inaugural International Day of Clean Energy on January 26, emphasizing a shift to renewable energy and efficiency for a fair, inclusive global energy transition. Highlighting disparities, with 675 million lacking electricity and 2.3 billion using harmful fuels, the day underscores the health and environmental benefits of clean energy. 

Secretary-General António Guterres advocates clean energy as pivotal for combating climate chaos and advancing sustainable development, urging governments to ramp up efforts and finance. UN-Energy commits to supporting equitable energy transitions, citing disparities in global renewable investments. Special Representative Damilola Ogunbiyi calls for global energy compacts to strengthen commitments, citing over $1.3 trillion in pledges since 2021. 

Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua emphasizes upcoming milestones in SDG7 action at the April global stocktake and September Future Summit. 

Established by the UN General Assembly, the day aligns with SDG7 and Paris Agreement climate goals, aiming for universal clean energy access by 2030.
