With a specific emphasis on achievements in land restoration, resilience to drought, and efforts to combat desertification 'The 2024 Champions of the Earth Award' nominations are open for submissions.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched the call for nominations for the prestigious Champions of the Earth award, celebrating individuals and organizations whose extraordinary actions have significantly benefited the environment.
This year, UNEP is particularly seeking nominations for leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector who are pioneering innovative and sustainable solutions in land restoration, drought resilience, and combatting desertification.
Since its inception in 2005, the Champions of the Earth award has honored 116 laureates, including world leaders, individuals, and organizations, for their outstanding environmental contributions. Last year, UNEP received a record 2,500 nominations for this esteemed recognition.
As the world approaches the midpoint of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, urgent efforts are required to protect and rejuvenate ecosystems. Ecosystem restoration not only enhances livelihoods and reduces poverty but also strengthens resilience against extreme weather events and mitigates the climate crisis. Governments, civil society, and the private sector must intensify their efforts by scaling up funding, enhancing capacities, and promoting sustainable practices.
World Environment Day on 5 June 2024 will highlight themes of land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Additionally, the thirtieth anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification will be marked by its sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP) in December.
Restoring and revitalizing nature is crucial for improving both human and planetary health. Leaders across various sectors and regions are actively addressing the interconnected challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Champions of the Earth inspire and lead by example, underscoring the pivotal role of environmental sustainability in achieving sustainable development goals.
Nominations are open from 15 April to 12 May 2024 to individuals, organizations, and government entities across the categories of Policy Leadership, Inspiration and Action, Entrepreneurial Vision, and Science and Innovation. The Champions of the Earth awardees for 2024 will be announced later this year.
In 2023, UNEP recognized remarkable achievements in combatting plastic pollution, honoring the following Champions of the Earth:
Mayor Josefina Belmonte of Quezon City, Philippines, recognized for Policy Leadership, driving comprehensive environmental policies to combat the climate crisis and eliminate plastic pollution through bans on single-use plastics and innovative recycling programs.
Ellen MacArthur Foundation (United Kingdom), honored in the Inspiration and Action category for mainstreaming lifecycle approaches to tackle plastic pollution and foster circular economy solutions globally.
Blue Circle (China), acknowledged in the Entrepreneurial Vision category for employing blockchain technology to monitor and recycle marine plastic waste, contributing significantly to environmental conservation efforts.
José Manuel Moller (Chile), also honored in the Entrepreneurial Vision category for founding Algramo, a pioneering refill service reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices in consumer goods.
Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (South Africa), recognized in the Science and Innovation category for its cutting-edge research and development of sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics, advancing local manufacturing and economic growth.
