The Santiago network is a crucial initiative aimed at helping vulnerable developing countries manage climate-related loss and damage more effectively by providing enhanced technical assistance and capacity building.
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) with the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to jointly host the network's secretariat. This milestone underscores the commitment to fully operationalize the network and achieve important goals by 2024.
Paola Albrito, Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of UNDRR, emphasized the importance of this step in advancing the agenda of climate loss and damage, as set out in COP28 outcomes.
The network promotes collaboration among vulnerable developing countries, civil society organizations, non-governmental entities, and the private sector to provide technical assistance, knowledge, and resources essential for managing climate risks and implementing effective actions at local, national, and regional levels.
Aligned with the Loss and Damage Fund established during COP28, these initiatives aim to deliver the necessary policy frameworks, financial support, and technical expertise to empower vulnerable developing countries to enhance their resilience to climate impacts and effectively manage associated loss and damage.
