The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has officially launched the nomination process for the 2025 Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction. The prestigious award recognizes outstanding contributions to disaster risk reduction, with a particular emphasis on democratizing access to science and technology for disaster-resilient communities.
The theme for this year’s award is "Connecting science to people: democratizing access to innovation and technology for disaster resilient communities," underscoring the importance of bridging scientific knowledge and local action. Nominations are open until March 28, 2025, and can only be submitted online.
What the Sasakawa Award Recognizes
Established in 1986, the Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction is part of a trio of prizes funded by the Nippon Foundation of Japan, alongside the WHO Sasakawa Health Prize and the UN Environment Programme Sasakawa Environment Prize. This award celebrates individuals or institutions that have made significant contributions to reducing disaster risks and promoting resilience in vulnerable communities.
The 2025 award focuses on initiatives that enhance community resilience by expanding access to scientific research and technological innovations. By democratizing access to these tools, communities worldwide can better prepare for and mitigate the effects of natural disasters, especially in multi-hazard contexts where interconnected risks threaten global safety.
In line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Sasakawa Award promotes an inclusive, people-centered approach to disaster risk management, celebrating efforts that combine scientific advancements with on-the-ground solutions.
