Ted Turner, the media entrepreneur who transformed television journalism by launching the world’s first 24-hour news network, has died at the age of 87. Turner founded Cable News Network, widely known as CNN, in 1980. His work reshaped how millions of people received breaking news across the globe.
CNN confirmed Turner’s death in a statement released by chairman and CEO Mark Thompson. He described Turner as a fearless leader who changed modern broadcasting. US President Donald Trump also paid tribute, calling Turner “one of the greats of broadcast history.”
CNN Created The Modern 24-Hour News Era
When Turner launched CNN in Atlanta, many critics doubted that audiences would watch news around the clock. The channel was mocked in its early years. However, CNN quickly gained global attention through live coverage of major events.
The network delivered continuous reporting during the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan and the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster. CNN later became a major global source during the 1990-1991 Gulf War. Its live reporting from Iraq marked a turning point for television journalism.
Media analysts say Turner’s model changed the global news industry permanently. Several networks later adopted the same format, including Fox News and other international broadcasters.

Beyond CNN: Sports, Entertainment And Philanthropy
Turner built a large media empire through Turner Broadcasting System. His companies included TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies. He also owned sports franchises such as the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks.
Outside media, Turner won the America’s Cup sailing competition in 1977. He later became known for philanthropy and environmental projects. Turner pledged $1 billion to the United Nations and supported clean energy programs worldwide.
Turner revealed in 2018 that he had Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disease. He was previously married to actor Jane Fonda from 1991 to 2001.
His influence on television, media business and global journalism remains significant decades after CNN’s launch.
