Emphasis on Marine Litter and Ecosystem Conservation
On the second day of the 26th Intergovernmental Meeting of the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA), representatives from nine East Asian nations convened in Siem Reap, Cambodia, to tackle critical initiatives aimed at protecting the region's marine and coastal environments. Countries including Cambodia, China, Indonesia, and the Philippines are actively engaging in discussions that are vital for sustainable marine management.
Key agenda items include reviewing COBSEA’s activities from 2023 to 2024 and crafting a workplan and budget for 2025-2026. Participants are also focusing on biennial plans that pertain to the COBSEA Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter and the Marine and Coastal Ecosystems Framework. An independent strategic review of the COBSEA Secretariat, presented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), aims to bolster the implementation of COBSEA's Strategic Directions for 2023-2027.
Preparatory Meetings and Inclusive Format
Prior to the main event, the sixth meeting of the Working Group on Marine Litter (WGML-6) and the second meeting of the Working Group on Marine and Coastal Ecosystems (WGMCE-2) took place on October 21-22, 2024. These preparatory discussions set the groundwork for addressing urgent topics such as marine pollution and ecosystem management.
The ongoing meeting, which runs from October 23-25, 2024, employs a hybrid format, facilitating both in-person and online participation to maximize engagement. All relevant documents are accessible to participants through the Papersmart Portal, promoting transparency and collaborative efforts among countries dedicated to preserving the East Asian Seas.
As COBSEA participants engage in discussions, the focus remains on developing effective strategies that support global environmental objectives, combat land-based marine pollution, and strengthen regional governance for sustainable marine practices.
