In a pivotal move for the future of space exploration and environmental stewardship, Finland has officially signed NASA's Artemis Accords, committing to safe, sustainable, and responsible space activities. The signing ceremony took place at Aalto University’s Winter Satellite Workshop 2025 in Espoo, Finland, where space experts and leaders gathered to celebrate the milestone. Finland becomes the 53rd nation to join the growing global alliance that aims to explore space while preserving its vast potential for future generations.
“This agreement helps ensure that space exploration is conducted with respect for our environment—both here on Earth and beyond,” said NASA Associate Administrator Jim Free, who delivered virtual remarks during the ceremony. The Artemis Accords are centered on collaboration, transparency, and shared scientific knowledge, promoting ethical practices in space that will also protect the space environment for the long term.
Collaborating for a Greener, Safer Future in Space
Finland’s decision to sign the Artemis Accords aligns with its own space strategy, which emphasizes international cooperation and sustainability. Finland has long been at the forefront of space innovation, with contributions in Earth observation, satellite technology, and environmental monitoring. Finnish companies, like Nokia, are helping develop technologies that can transform how we communicate and monitor our planet from space.
Through its involvement in NASA's Artemis program, Finland is helping to develop lunar communications infrastructure, including the delivery of a groundbreaking 4G communication system to the Moon. This technology will not only facilitate future missions but could also play a key role in addressing climate challenges by enhancing our ability to observe and communicate about environmental changes from space.

Building a Sustainable Future for Space and Earth
Finland’s role in space exploration extends beyond technology and innovation—it also includes critical contributions to Earth-focused environmental research. For example, the Finnish Meteorological Institute provided key instruments for NASA’s Curiosity Rover, helping to measure environmental conditions on Mars. These efforts highlight Finland's commitment to advancing both space exploration and our understanding of planetary environments, all while adhering to sustainable practices.
The Artemis Accords, initiated by NASA in 2020, are designed to ensure space exploration contributes positively to humanity while safeguarding space for future generations. Grounded in the principles of the Outer Space Treaty, the Accords advocate for the transparent sharing of scientific data, the preservation of space, and the cooperative exploration of celestial bodies like the Moon. By joining the Accords, Finland strengthens its partnership with the global community in ensuring that space exploration benefits both Earth and space environments, marking an essential step towards a sustainable and cooperative future for all.
