Hurricane Helene struck northwestern Florida late Thursday night as a powerful Category 4 storm, raising alarm not just in the southeastern U.S. but around the globe. Making landfall at approximately 11:10 p.m. EDT near the mouth of the Aucilla River, Helene brought maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (225 kph) and is anticipated to unleash a devastating storm surge and heavy rainfall across multiple states.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami has characterized Helene’s landfall as potentially catastrophic, echoing concerns raised during past hurricane seasons. This year’s hurricane outlook has already prompted warnings for millions, with hurricane and flash flood alerts extending from Florida to northern Georgia and western North Carolina.

A State in Crisis

More than a million homes and businesses in Florida were left without power following the storm, with Georgia seeing over 50,000 outages. State governors across Florida, Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas, and Virginia declared states of emergency in anticipation of the hurricane's severe impact. 

The storm’s effects were felt before landfall, with tropical storm-force winds impacting the Gulf Coast and inundating areas such as Siesta Key and St. Pete Beach. Authorities in affected regions issued urgent evacuation orders, emphasizing the life-threatening potential of the storm surge, which could reach heights of up to 20 feet (6 meters) in places like Apalachee Bay.

Casualties and Damage Reports

Tragedy struck early in the storm, with reports of at least one fatality in Florida due to a fallen sign and two more in Georgia linked to a suspected tornado spawned by Helene’s winds. As heavy rains continued, up to 14 inches (36 centimeters) of additional rainfall could inundate the North Carolina mountains, posing severe flood risks that forecasters warn could exceed anything seen in the last century.
