The United Nations General Assembly designated March 21 as the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012, aiming to raise global awareness about the crucial roles forests play in sustaining life on Earth. The observance encourages countries around the world to organize activities such as tree planting campaigns and other initiatives that celebrate forests. Each year, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests selects a theme to highlight specific aspects of forest ecosystems. For 2025, the theme is "Forests and Food," focusing on the critical connection between forests and food security.
Forests as a Vital Resource for Livelihoods
Forests provide essential resources for over five billion people worldwide. These ecosystems contribute significantly to food security, offering a variety of non-timber forest products such as fruits, nuts, mushrooms, honey, and wild meat. For many rural and indigenous communities, these products are vital sources of nutrition, income, and medicines. Additionally, forests support livelihoods by providing wood and other materials used for cooking and heating. Over two billion people still rely on woodfuel for cooking, an essential practice for many rural households.
The Role of Forests in Agriculture and Water Security
Beyond their direct contributions to food and nutrition, forests play a key role in supporting agricultural practices. Forests help maintain soil fertility, regulate water cycles, and provide essential habitats for pollinators. These factors contribute to healthier, more productive agricultural systems. Forests also act as natural barriers against wind and temperature fluctuations, benefiting both crops and livestock.
In addition to supporting farming, forests are vital for water security. Forested watersheds provide freshwater to over 85 percent of the world’s major cities, playing an integral role in urban food security.
Forests as Pillars of Resilience
The theme of the 2025 International Day of Forests underscores the resilience forests offer, particularly in times of crisis. When communities face challenges such as failed harvests or conflicts, forests serve as a critical safety net, providing food and income. Wild meat from forests remains a significant source of protein, especially for indigenous and rural populations in tropical regions. This diverse array of forest products is vital for the survival of millions of people around the globe.
