The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is now inviting nominations for authors to contribute to its upcoming 2027 Methodology Report on Inventories for Short-Lived Climate Forcers. The report, scheduled for review by the IPCC in the latter half of 2027, aims to enhance global capabilities in tracking emissions of climate forcers with relatively short atmospheric lifetimes.
The call for nominations follows the IPCC’s 61st Session, held from July 27 to August 2, 2024, in Sofia, Bulgaria, where the outline and timeline for the Methodology Report were finalized. The report is expected to provide critical updates and methodologies for estimating emissions of short-lived climate forcers, which are not fully covered in the recently published IPCC Guidelines.
Significance of the Report
“This Methodology Report will underpin renewed efforts to better equip all governments in the world to estimate high-quality emission data on short-lived climate forcers not covered in recently published IPCC Guidelines,” stated Takeshi Enoki, Co-Chair of the Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories.
Role of Authors
The IPCC is seeking Coordinating Lead Authors and Lead Authors to draft and refine the report. These experts will be responsible for developing the report's chapters and incorporating feedback from the review process. The IPCC emphasizes the importance of including a diverse range of scientific, technical, and socio-economic perspectives in the author teams. A balance of experienced contributors and newcomers, including younger scientists, as well as gender diversity, is also sought.
“Bringing together diverse voices, expertise, and regional perspectives is crucial to producing a globally relevant and well-informed report,” noted Mazhar Hayat, Co-Chair of the Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories.
Nomination Process
Governments, Observer Organizations, and IPCC Bureau Members are encouraged to submit nominations for author roles by September 13, 2024 (midnight CEST). Nominations must be submitted through a dedicated online tool, accessible only to Focal Points and IPCC Bureau Members.
Those interested in participating as part of the author team should contact their relevant Focal Point. A list of Focal Points for IPCC member governments and observer organizations is available on the IPCC website.

About the IPCC
The IPCC, established in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), is the leading international body for assessing climate science. It comprises 195 member states and plays a crucial role in providing policymakers with scientific assessments on climate change, its impacts, and potential mitigation strategies.
The IPCC’s comprehensive reports, including the upcoming 2027 Methodology Report, are essential in guiding global climate policy and enhancing understanding of climate forcers and their impacts.
