Exciting news for environmentally conscious consumers and businesses! The Environmental Alliance of America has officially launched the region's first eco-labeling program.
This new initiative is designed to promote sustainable trade and help consumers make more informed choices about the products they buy.
Supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and funded by Germany, this program is a game-changer for Latin America and the Caribbean. It comes as a result of a 2023 decision by the Forum of Ministers of Environment, underscoring the region's commitment to improving eco-labeling practices.
According to Sheila Aggarwal-Khan, UNEP’s Director of the Industry and Economy Division, “This program is essential for providing clear and reliable information about the environmental impact of products. It helps consumers make informed decisions and encourages businesses to adopt more sustainable practices. Our collective efforts are key to addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.”
Governments from Colombia, Ecuador, and Costa Rica highlighted that the eco-label will ensure products meet strict environmental criteria. This means that consumers will receive trustworthy information about how products are made, empowering them to make responsible purchasing choices. Additionally, businesses can benefit from reduced operational costs and lower risks, while contributing to local economies and creating green jobs.
Juan Bello, UNEP’s Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, added: “By harmonizing eco-labeling across the region, we are creating a powerful tool that facilitates the trade of sustainable products and promotes economic integration.”
Germany has provided initial funding for this project through the EcoAdvance initiative. Dr. Ulf D. Jaeckel from the German Federal Ministry expressed his support, saying, “We are thrilled to see this regional eco-label come to life and hope it will be recognized for its credibility and high standards. We’re proud to support this effort and work alongside UNEP and other partners.”
With the launch of this eco-labeling program, consumers and businesses across Latin America and the Caribbean will have a valuable resource to support sustainable choices and practices.
