Electric vehicle (EV) sales reached a record high in the United Kingdom in March 2026, driven by rising fuel costs and shifting consumer preferences. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations rose 24.2% year-on-year to 86,120 units, marking the highest monthly total on record.
Rising Fuel Prices Drive Consumer Shift
The surge in EV demand coincides with a sharp increase in fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. According to data from the RAC, average petrol prices climbed to around £1.57 per liter, up about 18% since late February. Diesel prices rose even more steeply, reaching nearly £1.89 per liter.
Industry analysts report that higher fuel costs are influencing consumer decisions. Increased online interest and inquiries about EVs suggest that buyers are increasingly considering long-term savings on running costs.
Market Growth Signals Recovery but Gaps Remain
Despite strong growth, EVs accounted for around 22% of total car sales in March. This remains below targets set under the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, which aims for a higher share of fully electric vehicles in the coming years.
The broader auto market’s recovery indicates improving demand, but challenges remain. Analysts note that some of March’s sales likely reflect earlier purchase decisions made before recent fuel price increases.
Petrol and Diesel Still Dominate Sales
Traditional fuel vehicles continue to hold a significant share of the market. Petrol cars accounted for 43.6% of total sales, with nearly 166,000 units sold, though this marked a 6% decline from the previous year. Diesel vehicle sales dropped more sharply by 11.4%, now representing less than 5% of the market.
At the same time, made in China models are gaining momentum among EV buyers. The trend reflects a shift in the market, as rising fuel prices have contributed to increased interest in electric vehicles.
