In an ambitious move to spotlight innovative climate action worldwide, Nigar Arpadarai, the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29, has officially launched the "Impact Makers" campaign. This initiative aims to elevate diverse leaders and their groundbreaking solutions in the fight against climate change, demonstrating that effective action is already happening across various sectors and communities.
The Impact Makers campaign will showcase up to 50 outstanding projects from social entrepreneurs, community leaders, and startups that exemplify how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while promoting resilience to climate change. This initiative is not just about recognition; it is about scaling tangible solutions that can inspire action on a global scale.
"Climate change is a global challenge requiring a global response. It also presents the opportunity of a lifetime to create a fairer world for future generations," Arpadarai stated. "Through the Impact Makers campaign, I want to bring incredible stories and innovations to the forefront, inspiring everyone to contribute to the collective good."
Showcasing Innovation at Climate Week and Beyond
Selected Impact Makers will be profiled during Climate Week in New York City and at COP29 in Azerbaijan, with further engagement planned through to COP30 in Brazil in 2025. The campaign will be accessible online via a dedicated webpage and an exhibition, allowing a wider audience to engage with these powerful narratives.
The initiative aims to inspire innovation across key sectors, including energy, transportation, industry, land use, and water management. It is aligned with the Marrakech Partnership, which unites global organizations to drive ambitious climate action.
Community Engagement and Nominations
A diverse Steering Committee, comprising expert research institutes, climate resilience networks, and social impact organizations, will recommend candidates based on their innovation, resourcefulness, and the impact of their initiatives. Nominations will be evaluated on their scalability and communication skills, ensuring a robust selection of true change-makers.
To broaden the campaign's reach, a social media activation will encourage participants to share compelling "before and after" stories of climate initiatives using the hashtag #COP29ImpactMakers. This approach aims to create a vibrant community of advocates showcasing how local efforts contribute to global solutions.
Kick-Off Event and Future Aspirations
The official kick-off event for the Impact Makers campaign is scheduled for September 23 during Climate Week in New York City, where the first batch of Impact Makers will be announced. The campaign not only seeks to amplify existing efforts but also aims to cultivate solidarity and inspire a new wave of climate innovators.
As Arpadarai puts it, "While serving as COP29 High-Level Champion, I’ve met countless people who have inspired me and filled me with renewed determination to combat climate change. Together, we can pave the way for a sustainable future."
The Impact Makers campaign stands as a beacon of hope, emphasizing that through collective effort and innovative solutions, we can tackle the urgent challenges posed by climate change.
