The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released its 2024 Annual Report, calling for increased global cooperation to address the growing environmental challenges that threaten the planet. The report emphasizes the urgency for countries to align their actions with multilateral environmental agreements, tackle climate change, and invest in sustainable development solutions.
Environmental Negotiations and Key Conferences
In 2024, UNEP coordinated and supported numerous critical environmental negotiations aimed at creating stronger global environmental frameworks. These included major conferences such as the sixth UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) in Kenya, the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16) in Colombia, and the UN Climate Conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan. Additionally, important discussions took place at the fifth session on plastic pollution in South Korea and the UN Desertification COP (COP16) in Saudi Arabia.
Although progress was made in various areas, the report highlighted several unresolved issues that indicate the need for more robust collaboration between nations. UNEP stressed that despite significant advancements in some negotiations, countries must work more closely together to ensure environmental measures are agreed upon and implemented effectively.
Science and Data-Driven Solutions to Environmental Challenges
The UNEP Annual Report also underscored the importance of scientific research and data in driving solutions to global environmental issues. UNEP’s 2024 Emissions Gap Report revealed significant gaps in countries' climate pledges, urging nations to accelerate efforts to meet the Paris Agreement's target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C by 2100.
In addition, the UNEP Adaptation Gap Report highlighted the continued disparity between the international finance needed for adaptation efforts in developing countries and the available funding. Although international public adaptation finance increased by $6 billion between 2021 and 2022, a considerable funding gap remains.
Practical Solutions and Funding Initiatives
UNEP's role in addressing methane emissions has been pivotal. The organization’s Methane Alert and Response System, which uses satellite data and machine learning to detect methane leaks, has successfully identified over 1,000 methane leakages in the past two years. This has led to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in countries such as Algeria and Nigeria, equivalent to the emissions produced by 1 million cars in one year.
Moreover, UNEP mobilized significant co-financing for projects focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric mobility, and low-emission buildings. These initiatives, benefiting over 17 million people, are expected to reduce nearly 300 million tonnes of greenhouse gases—equivalent to taking 65 million cars off the road.

Urgent Call for Enhanced Ambition in 2025
Looking ahead to 2025, UNEP's Executive Director, Inger Andersen, emphasized the need for nations to increase their ambition and action. Andersen called for significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, more financial commitments for climate adaptation, and stronger global agreements to combat plastic pollution. She stated, “Collaboration across borders and across our differences is the only option to protect the foundation of humanity’s existence – Planet Earth.”
The report underscores the critical importance of concerted global action and alignment in addressing environmental challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
