The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has opened nominations for its 2025 Champions of the Earth award, the organization’s highest environmental recognition. This year’s awards will prioritize climate action, particularly in areas such as methane reduction, sustainable buildings, cooling technologies, air quality improvement, and forest restoration.
Nominations are open from April 2 through April 30, 2025, to individuals, organizations, and governments demonstrating innovative and sustainable environmental solutions. Winners will be announced later in the year.
Climate Action at the Core of 2025 Awards
The 2025 edition coincides with a key period for global climate efforts, as nations submit the third cycle of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. The year also marks the 10th anniversary of the landmark climate accord.
According to UNEP, while global temperature projections have improved—from an anticipated 5°C rise in 2010 to 2.6–3.1°C based on current pledges—these figures still exceed the 1.5°C target set in the Paris Agreement. UNEP underscores the role of targeted climate actions in bridging this gap.
The organization is focusing this year’s awards on sectors with significant climate and health co-benefits. For example:
Methane mitigation is linked to improved air quality, reduced energy waste, and enhanced food security, with potential economic gains in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
Sustainable cooling technologies contribute to public health, food preservation, and productivity, especially amid rising global temperatures.
Improving air quality reduces premature mortality and healthcare costs, while enhancing economic development.
Forest ecosystem restoration supports disaster resilience and water resources.
Climate-resilient buildings help lower emissions and provide protection against extreme weather.
UNEP notes that the global transition to net-zero emissions by 2050 could increase global GDP by 7% compared to projections under current policies.
Award Categories and Eligibility
Nominees can be submitted under four categories: Policy Leadership, Inspiration and Action, Entrepreneurial Vision, and Science and Innovation. Eligible candidates include individuals, civil society groups, companies, and government bodies.
Since the award’s establishment in 2005, UNEP has honored 122 laureates, including 28 world leaders, 74 individuals, and 20 organizations. The 2025 awards will mark the program’s 20th anniversary.
Recognizing Past Environmental Leaders
In 2024, UNEP recognized several figures for their contributions to land restoration and drought resilience. Honorees included:
Sonia Guajajara, Brazil’s Minister of Indigenous Peoples.
Amy Bowers Cordalis, Indigenous rights advocate.
Gabriel Paun, Romanian environmental defender.
Lu Qi, Chinese scientist.
Madhav Gadgil, Indian ecologist.
SEKEM, a sustainable agriculture initiative based in Egypt.
These recipients were acknowledged for efforts that align with UNEP’s climate and sustainability goals, including combating desertification and promoting ecosystem resilience.
