The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held a key briefing on April 6, 2026, outlining progress on the UN80 reform initiative, a multi-phase effort aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and coordination across the UN system. Additional sessions are scheduled for April 29 and May 28, signaling continued focus on institutional reforms.
The initiative includes three core workstreams focused on operational efficiency, mandate review, and structural realignment. Officials presented early findings and updates across several reform areas, including organizational restructuring, data systems, and technology integration.
Focus on Efficiency, Mandates, and Structural Reform
UNGA President Annalena Baerbock stated that the recently adopted resolution on mandate creation and review marks a transition toward implementation of reforms. She emphasized the formation of an Ad Hoc Working Group to assess mandate effectiveness, with work set to resume by May 1, 2026.
Under-Secretary-General for Policy Guy Ryder described the resolution as a key step in translating reform goals into actionable outcomes. He noted that a consolidated report from the UN Secretary-General will provide further updates to guide member states in decision-making.
Proposed UNFPA–UN Women Merger
A major point of discussion was the preliminary assessment of a potential merger between the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN Women. Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed indicated that a unified framework could strengthen advocacy for women’s rights while maintaining existing mandates.
UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous and UNFPA Executive Director Diene Keita confirmed that consultations with member states and civil society are ongoing. The final proposal will be submitted to the General Assembly for review and guidance.
Technology and Data Systems Take Center Stage
Progress in digital transformation was also highlighted. International Telecommunication Union Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin outlined efforts to modernize UN operations through improved technology systems, aiming to reduce duplication and enhance coordination.
Meanwhile, Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua and UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell detailed plans for a UN System Data Commons. The initiative seeks to improve data interoperability and accessibility across agencies.
The UN80 initiative currently includes 31 work packages and 86 actions, positioning it as a comprehensive reform effort within the UN system.
