For the first time, this global campaign will highlight the alarming decline in insect populations and its impact on avian migration, emphasizing that the fate of these birds is intricately linked to the health of insect ecosystems.

World Migratory Bird Day is observed on two distinct dates, May 11 and October 12, to align with the migratory patterns of birds across different hemispheres. This year’s focus on insects underscores their essential role as a high-energy food source during critical periods of migration and breeding.

The Insect-Bird Connection

Migratory birds rely heavily on insects, which provide crucial nutrients and energy necessary for their long journeys. During migration, birds target habitats rich in insects—fields, wetlands, and forests—where they replenish energy reserves before continuing their arduous travels. The synchronization of bird migration with insect abundance is vital; a decline in insect populations can severely disrupt this balance, impacting bird health and survival.
