As the world marks the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) today, attention is drawn to the alarming reality that over one billion children globally are at extreme risk from climate-related disasters. This year’s theme underscores the critical role of education in empowering youth to build resilience and prepare for an uncertain future.
To effectively address these vulnerabilities, national and local disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies must prioritize the specific needs of children and youth. This aligns with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, which calls for the meaningful participation of youth in disaster planning and response efforts.
Education as a Lifeline
The IDDRR emphasizes the urgent need for educational initiatives that not only protect children but also empower them as agents of change in their communities. "Young people must be equipped with skills and knowledge to shape a cleaner, greener, more climate-resilient future," stated António Guterres, UN Secretary-General. Educational programs designed to raise awareness about disaster risks and response strategies are crucial. By integrating disaster risk reduction into school curricula and providing hands-on training through simulations and drills, children can become proactive participants in safeguarding their communities.
Call to Action
This year’s IDDRR calls on governments to invest in two key areas to enhance the safety and resilience of educational institutions:
Safe Schools: Ensuring that schools are disaster-resilient and integrated into early warning systems is essential. Safe learning environments not only protect children during disasters but also help maintain continuity in education.
Empowerment through Education: Age-appropriate educational programs that inform children about risks and encourage preparedness are vital. Empowered students can act swiftly in response to early warnings, fostering a culture of resilience that extends beyond the classroom.
In support of these goals, the Comprehensive School Safety Framework 2022-2030 provides a structured approach for governments to safeguard educational facilities and promote disaster risk awareness among students.
A Collective Effort
As part of today’s observance, organizations and partners are encouraged to share success stories highlighting effective DRR strategies, such as national endorsements of safety frameworks, construction of resilient schools, and engaging educational materials aimed at raising awareness. Social media campaigns will utilize hashtags like #DRRDay and #SafeChildrenSafeSchools to amplify these initiatives.

Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director, emphasized the importance of youth involvement in disaster risk reduction efforts, stating, "Young people are not just passive victims. They have an active role to play as leaders, collaborating and co-creating solutions."
The IDDRR serves as a critical reminder of the need for immediate action. Decisions made today will shape the future resilience of communities worldwide. As Paola Albrito, Acting SRSG and Director of UNDRR, poignantly stated, "We owe it to future generations to empower them to reduce their disaster risks."
As communities around the globe come together today, it is clear that a collective commitment to education, empowerment, and safety can foster a brighter, more resilient future for all children.
