India hosted the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers' Meeting in Gurugram on June 25, bringing together energy ministers, senior officials, and international organizations to discuss energy security, sustainability, technology, and access. The meeting was held under India's BRICS Chairship 2026 and concluded with the adoption of a Joint Communiqué outlining shared priorities for future cooperation among BRICS countries.
Representatives from the International Solar Alliance, the Global Biofuels Alliance, and the New Development Bank also participated in the discussions. The meeting was organized under the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability" and guided by the energy track theme "Energy for All."
New Digital Centre Marks Key Outcome Of India's Chairship
One of the most significant outcomes of the meeting was the launch of the BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence for Smart Grids and Energy Storage. The platform is designed to support knowledge sharing, capacity building, policy exchange, and pilot projects among BRICS member nations.
Ministers also adopted the BRICS Guiding Principles on Smart Grids and Energy Storage. The framework aims to support modern electricity networks, renewable energy integration, and energy storage development. Officials further reviewed progress on the BRICS Joint Report on Hydrogen Value Chains 2026, which focuses on hydrogen technologies and industrial applications.
India Highlights Energy Transition And Clean Energy Growth
Addressing the meeting, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal outlined India's energy sector progress. He said India has become the world's third-largest producer and consumer of electricity, with installed power capacity approaching 540 gigawatts.
According to the minister, non-fossil fuel sources now account for more than half of India's installed electricity capacity. He also noted that solar power capacity has expanded from about 3 GW in 2014 to more than 154 GW. India highlighted plans to achieve more than 400 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2032 and 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
BRICS Reaffirms Focus On Energy Security And Affordable Access
The Joint Communiqué emphasized the importance of energy security, resilient supply chains, and diversified energy systems. Ministers reaffirmed that countries should be able to pursue energy transitions according to their national circumstances, development priorities, and policy frameworks.
The document also highlighted cooperation in renewable energy, biofuels, hydrogen, critical minerals, carbon capture technologies, energy efficiency, and digitalization. Ministers stressed the need for affordable financing and support for emerging economies seeking reliable and sustainable energy access.
The meeting concluded with member countries reaffirming their commitment to deeper energy cooperation and support for secure, affordable, sustainable, and resilient energy systems. BRICS members also expressed support for continued collaboration under China's BRICS Chairship in 2027.
