India is preparing to bring together government agencies, scientists, industry leaders, startups and academic institutions for a national workshop aimed at strengthening water research and innovation. The event, organized by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, will take place on June 1 in New Delhi and is expected to shape future priorities for water management, technology development and policy planning.
The workshop comes as India faces growing challenges related to water availability, groundwater depletion, climate change and increasing demand from agriculture, industry and urban centers.
New Research Initiatives Target Water Challenges
A key announcement at the workshop will be the launch of 'MAHA on Water (Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas for Water)', a joint initiative of the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the National Anusandhan Research Foundation (ANRF).
The program aims to support advanced research in water resources management, drinking water systems, climate resilience and water-use efficiency. An open call for research proposals will invite scientists and institutions to develop solutions for critical water-sector challenges.
The ministry will also launch a new call for startups and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through the BHARAT-WIN Portal to encourage innovation, product development and technology deployment in the sector.
Technology And Community Participation In Focus
The workshop will witness the launch of 'Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: Catch the Rain', a digital platform designed to document and promote community-led water conservation efforts. The platform seeks to increase public participation in rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and local water management initiatives.
In another significant development, the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding to expand the use of satellite-based technologies for water resource assessment and monitoring.
Shaping India’s Water Future
Technical sessions will examine groundwater management, irrigation efficiency, floodplain mapping, climate resilience, dam safety and remote-sensing applications. Researchers and beneficiaries will present outcomes from projects implemented over the past 12 years.
The workshop is expected to help define research priorities for the coming years while strengthening collaboration between policymakers, scientists and industry stakeholders. Officials say the initiative aims to support evidence-based policymaking and long-term water security through innovation, technology and public participation.
