New Delhi has become the focal point of global urban development discussions as the 13th BRICS Urbanisation Forum commenced under India’s chairship. The two-day meeting brings together ministers, senior officials and urban development experts from BRICS member nations and partner countries to discuss strategies for building inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities.
Hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the forum is centered on the theme, “Cities for People: BRICS Cooperation for Inclusive and Resilient Urban Futures.” Participants include representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates.
India is hosting the BRICS Urbanisation Forum for the fourth time, following earlier editions in New Delhi in 2013, Visakhapatnam in 2016 and a virtual edition in 2021.
Urban Development Takes Center Stage In BRICS Agenda
Opening the forum, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal highlighted the growing role of cities in economic growth, climate resilience and infrastructure development. He identified inclusive urban development, disaster-resilient infrastructure, institutional strengthening and digital innovation as key pillars of India's urban strategy.
Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Srinivas Katikithala said the forum has become an important platform for member countries to exchange experiences, strengthen cooperation and address common urban challenges.
During the inaugural session, the ministry released *India’s Urban Transformation: Stories of Change*, a publication highlighting successful urban development initiatives undertaken by states and Union Territories.
Ministers Discuss Cooperation On Sustainable Growth
A high-level plenary session provided an opportunity for participating nations to present their perspectives on urban planning, housing, infrastructure and sustainability. Delegates discussed challenges associated with rapid urbanisation, climate risks, resource management and service delivery.
On the sidelines of the forum, India and Russia held bilateral discussions on sustainable urban development. Both sides reviewed progress on a proposed Memorandum of Understanding covering urban planning, affordable housing, municipal infrastructure, sustainable construction technologies and capacity building.
Global Focus On Resilient And Inclusive Cities
Delegates also visited major urban development projects in New Delhi, including the New Parliament Complex and the India Gate–Kartavya Path precinct. The visits offered insights into India's recent urban infrastructure initiatives.
As cities across the world face increasing pressure from population growth, climate change and infrastructure demands, the forum highlights the importance of international cooperation in building resilient, inclusive and sustainable urban futures.
