Air quality in Delhi-NCR has worsened again, prompting authorities to activate emergency pollution control measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has invoked Stage-I of GRAP across the National Capital Region after Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 226, placing it in the ‘Poor’ category, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
AQI Trends and Weather Conditions Behind Pollution Spike
A review by CAQM, based on forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), indicates that unfavorable meteorological conditions are driving the rise in pollution levels.
Experts note that low wind speed, temperature fluctuations, and atmospheric stability are limiting pollutant dispersion. Forecasts suggest AQI levels are likely to remain in the ‘Poor’ category over the next two days, raising concerns about prolonged exposure.

GRAP Stage-I Measures Implemented Across NCR
Authorities have enforced 31 preventive actions under Stage-I of GRAP to curb pollution. Key measures include strict dust control at construction and demolition sites, mandatory use of anti-smog guns, and mechanized road sweeping with water sprinkling.
Open burning of waste and biomass is prohibited, with penalties for violations. Pollution control norms for industries, brick kilns, and thermal power plants are being strictly enforced. Vehicles are under increased scrutiny, with checks on Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates and penalties for visible emissions.
Traffic management has also been intensified, including diversion of non-destined trucks and improved congestion control. Diesel generator usage is restricted, and authorities are ensuring uninterrupted power supply to reduce reliance on backup generators.
Public Advisory and Ongoing Monitoring
Authorities have urged residents to follow pollution advisories and minimize activities contributing to emissions. Public transport services are being strengthened to reduce vehicular load.
Pollution control agencies, including state boards and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, have been directed to ensure strict implementation and real-time monitoring. The CAQM will continue to review the situation and may escalate measures if air quality deteriorates further.
