India expanded its clean energy manufacturing capacity on May 14 after the government dedicated a new 200 MW solar module manufacturing line at Central Electronics Limited (CEL). The project was inaugurated by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who said renewable energy will play a major role in achieving India’s net-zero emissions target by 2070.
The new manufacturing facility is expected to strengthen domestic solar production as India increases investment in non-fossil fuel energy systems. Officials said the project also supports the long-term “Viksit Bharat 2047” national development vision.
India Pushes Indigenous Solar Manufacturing
During the event, the minister said India is rapidly expanding its capabilities in solar, wind, nuclear and ocean-based energy sectors. He stated that the country is following an integrated clean energy strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and improve energy security.
Officials highlighted CEL’s historic role in India’s renewable energy sector. The company manufactured India’s first solar cell in 1977 and established the country’s first solar plant in 1979. The government said the new 200 MW line reflects renewed focus on indigenous technology and domestic manufacturing.
The ministry also noted that the project moved quickly from approval to operation. According to officials, the request for proposal was issued in April 2025 and the facility became operational within one year.
Strategic Technology And Private Sector Growth
The government said India’s strategic technology sectors are witnessing increased private participation under recent policy reforms. Officials pointed to expanded opportunities in space, nuclear energy and advanced renewable technologies.
CEL also announced expansion plans into vertical axis wind turbines, hybrid renewable systems, defence electronics and electronic warfare technologies.
Technology transfer agreements involving Council of Scientific and Industrial Research laboratories and CEL were also highlighted during the programme. These projects include indigenous weather monitoring and visibility systems designed for public and industrial use.
Officials said the new solar manufacturing line strengthens India’s clean energy ecosystem and supports long-term energy transition goals.
